I’ve seen a lot of small businesses start with two people, a laptop, and an idea—sometimes literally in a garage.
Some of those businesses are now thriving companies with hundreds of employees.
Others never really got out of the starting gate.
One of the biggest differences I see?
The ones that built with growth in mind—right from the beginning.
I get it. When you’re just getting started, it’s natural to want to keep things lean.
Maybe you’re using your personal cell. Maybe you’re on Gmail. Maybe your “website” is a social media page.
And in the short term, that works—until it doesn’t.
If your plan is to grow (and I hope it is), here’s what you need from the start:
Your personal cell won’t cut it forever. At some point, you’re going to want:
Business hours
Voicemail routing
Team extensions
Call forwarding when you’re on vacation or in a meeting
Plus, having a separate business number builds credibility—for clients, partners, and even when you apply for financing.
But here’s the kicker:
Make sure you get that number from a provider who’ll let you move it later.
Not every vendor will let you port your number when you grow into a more robust phone system.
And in today’s world, good numbers are getting harder to find—so get the best one you can. A good provider will help you search for one. (That said, I don’t recommend buying one from a reseller. It’s rarely worth the premium.)
Your website doesn’t need to be fancy at the start, but it does need to exist. This may be a great time to explore AI-powered website builders -- many tools out there make it easier than ever to launch a clean, professional site without hiring a developer.
Why?
It gives you credibility
It gives people a way to contact you
It anchors your brand—especially when you start building out email, marketing, and online presence
Take the time to choose a domain that works well with your business name—and if you can, get the .com.
You can always pick up other extensions (.net, .io, .solutions, etc.) later for other purposes, but .com is still the gold standard.
You might love your Gmail address—but customers won’t.
Branded email (like [email protected]) immediately makes your business feel real, established, and trustworthy.
It also sets you up to scale:
Easier user management
Better security
More control over your identity and branding
It’s easy to default to “cheap and fast” when starting a business.
But I’ve seen firsthand how small, smart decisions early on make it a lot easier to grow with confidence down the line.
You don’t need to overbuild or overspend. But do invest in the basics:
✔ A business number you can take with you
✔ A good domain and a simple, clear website
✔ A branded email that builds trust from day one
I started as part of three-person company years ago and I learned most of these lessons the hard way.
